Spectra Energy Top Ranked on Carbon Disclosure Project’s ‘Carbon Disclosure’ and ‘Carbon Performance’ Leadership Indices

September 20, 2010

HOUSTON, Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ — Spectra Energy Corp (NYSE: SE) was ranked first in the Energy Sector on the 2010 Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) “Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI).” The CDLI highlights constituent companies within the S&P 500 that have displayed the most professional and transparent approach to corporate governance in respect to climate change disclosure practices. This is the second year the company has held the top slot. Spectra Energy also ranked first in its sector on the CDP’s new “Carbon Performance Leadership Index (CPLI).” The CPLI recognizes S&P 500 companies that have demonstrated a superior commitment to strategy, governance, stakeholder communications and, most of all, emissions reduction in their CDP responses. The company tied for second overall on the CDP’s “Top 10 Performing Companies” for combined results in both disclosure and performance.

Companies, who voluntarily respond to the annual CDP questionnaire, are scored on their climate change disclosure and carbon management and risk mitigation efforts. High scores indicate good internal data management and understanding of climate change-related issues affecting the company, including greenhouse gas emissions, emissions reduction targets, and risks and opportunities associated with climate change.

“As we move toward a lower carbon future, the CDP provides us all with a tremendous opportunity to examine our practices in the mission-critical areas of governance, risk and opportunity management, emissions performance and climate change strategy,” said Greg Ebel, president and chief executive officer, Spectra Energy Corp. “We’re proud to have achieved the top rankings in both indices this year.”

The CDP’s S&P 500 Report, including names of companies featured in both Carbon Disclosure and Carbon Performance Leadership Indices, can be found at www.cdproject.net.
