Back Office Service Provider to Rural American Cable Companies Chooses American Craftsman to Design and Build Furniture

Chapel Hill, NC (Vocus) November 16, 2010

American Support, a provider of back office services to rural American cable companies in 26 states, has recently completed their move into the East 54 complex in Chapel Hill, NC. American Support worked with American furniture designers and builders to create custom furniture for their space.

“When we looked at the mass-manufactured options in the market, most were made overseas” said Matt Zemon, President and CEO of American Support. “We want to show our commitment to promoting jobs in America with everything we do. Finding American furniture makers and designers seemed like the only appropriate choice.”

The majority of the furniture was built and designed by American furniture designer Carl Celle. “I selected materials that represented the juxtaposition between the modern technology that American Support is using to service their cable companies along with the rural nature of the subscribers they support,” said Carl Celle. “All of the furniture has steel as the foundation. The open work spaces consist of clean, natural steel modern work tables with Red Oak tops from an Ashville, NC lumbar yard. The private offices have desks that are modeled after I-beam construction, reminiscent of the iron work used to build so many iconic buildings and bridges of American architecture.”

With the American Support project, the little details mattered to Celle. “I really wanted to create a tactile experience for American Support. One example of this is I had drawer pulls engraved with the client’s “American” logo which was made from a small metal shop in Arizona. I wanted the American Support employees to literally be reminded of who they were supporting and the jobs they were creating every time they opened a drawer.”

Celle also specified sliding barn doors for each private office. “The barn doors are aluminum. Clean. Modern. At the same time, they are a definite nod to the roots of American Support and serve as a reminder as to who the American Support team services.”

The conference room table was created by Richmond, VA furniture designer Christopher Hilderbrand using two 2″ salvaged mahogany slabs with cast iron legs that came from an old F.E. Reed metal lathe. This lathe is estimated to have been made between 1877 and 1898.

East 54 is a mixed-use East 54 is a new urban village of luxury condos, shops and dining, right in Chapel Hill, NC. Included in the neighborhood is four restaurants, an Aloft hotel, multiple retail establishments and an exclusive residential community.

As a participant in LEED®Neighborhood Development pilot program, East 54 is among the most environmentally sound, mixed-use communities in the country. Incorporating sustainable site development measures, water and energy conservation, materials re-use, and indoor environmental features, East 54 has a Gold Level Certification.

“The vast majority of our employees work from home,” Zemon continued. “That saves an average of 250 hours of driving time per employee. For every 100 employees we are reducing our environmental impact by approximately 25,000 driving hours per year. For the few of us who work in our new corporate location it was important to us to find a LEED certified building that represented our commitment to the environment.”

Carl Celle worked with Tricia Murray from LITTLE, an award winning Durham based architectural firm on the space design along with Scott Kross from East West Partners on the build out.
