Lightning Protection Institute Announces Inspection Program
MARYVILLE, Mo., March 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Lightning is the most frequently experienced weather peril, and its destructive electricity is responsible for billions of dollars in losses to homes and businesses in the U.S. Lightning protection systems can provide security and peace of mind to protect commercial, industrial and residential structures, but it’s important that quality control guidelines are met to ensure systems comply with national installation safety standards. Recognizing the need for quality assurance, the Lightning Protection Institute (LPI) is implementing an independent inspection program designed to perform on-site lightning protection inspections.
The new Lightning Protection Institute – Inspection Program (LPI-IP) will provide on-site lightning protection system inspection services, follow-up inspection reports and issue certification for systems that comply with national safety standards of LPI-175, NFPA-780 and/or UL-96A. Three types of LPI-IP inspections will be available under the service; each with its own fee structure. LPI-IP certificates will carry a three-year expiration date. The LPI-IP program is designed to serve a growing industry need for a comprehensive third party inspection approach for commercial and residential lightning protection projects in the U.S.
“LPI is dedicated to ensuring that today’s lightning protection systems provide the best possible quality in design, materials and installation practices,” said Tim Harger, LPI-IP program manager. “The LPI-IP program provides a valuable quality control measurement to help ensure system compliance with safety standards.”
Fees for the LPI-IP inspection program range from $575-$1575 for LPI members. Services are also available to non-LPI members, but at higher rates. Presently operating in its pilot stage, the inspection program is expected to begin accepting applications in April 2011. Visit the LPI-IP website at www.lpi-ip.com for more information.
LPI is a not-for-profit, nationwide group founded in 1955 to promote lightning safety, awareness and protection education. The organization provides a certification program to qualify competence in lightning protection installation, design and inspection. LPI offers a list of certified contractors across the USA.
