Highlights from June 2011 Global Video Insights Report by Vuclip

Most consumers tune out ads, but if the commercials are creative and engaging, the world will tune in on their mobile devices, according to Vuclip’s June 2011 Global Video Insights report. Vuclip, the world’s largest independent mobile video service, has compiled the top May global rankings based on its 330 million monthly mobile video views. Vuclip has also released device usage data based on video views.
This report is good news for brands looking to reach consumers. The lesson is that commercials with viral appeal work well for the short-length mobile video medium.
Some highlights of the report:
- In the UK the most-viewed video was a Royal Wedding spoof ad from T-Mobile.
- In the US the third most-viewed video was a Corning commercial detailing the wonders of glass. “ËœA Day Made of Glass’ not only went viral, but has also been scoring top places in Vuclip charts in Venezuela, Indonesia and Malaysia in the last few months.
- In Singapore, a Thai commercial from dtac “ËœDisconnect to Connect’ rang true with mobile watchers. This same clip has been topping Vuclip’s charts for a couple of months.
“A good commercial can be as viral as anything we see from Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga,” said Nickhil Jakatdar, CEO of Vuclip. “The mobile video medium and the short-form nature of commercials give brands a whole new way to reach mobile consumers, many of whom don’t have access to PCs.”
Beyond adverts, Vuclip found several videos that are entertaining audiences in unpredictable corners of the world such as Japanese anime series Naruto, which is hugely popular in both Latin America and Southeast Asia. US pop stars Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Britney Spears also continued their reign as global icons as evidenced by their popularity in Vuclip searches across 220 countries.

Another key learning from the report was a view of the relative popularity of different mobile devices:
Outside of the USA, BlackBerry has driven a high level of mobile video views. The BlackBerry 9700 was May’s top device, inching out the iPhone. In fact, BlackBerry devices held four of the top five spots for global mobile video consumption worldwide. While the iPad didn’t hit the top 30 ““ it did make a dent in another metric measured by Vuclip. The iPad now ranks 15th in terms of data consumed by device in May 2011.
