58 Killed As Hurricane Hits US Gulf Coast

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 12:00 CDT

A MAMMOTH clean-up operation will be launched across Louisiana and Mississippi today as residents and emergency workers venture out to assess the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

The storm smashed into the US Gulf Coast early yesterday at speeds reaching 145mph, knocking out power and leaving New Orleans under 6ft of water.

The storm has claimed 58 lives already, but the death toll is expected to rise.

Katrina changed course slightly as it hit land, downgrading from Category 5 - the strongest - t o Category 3.

The recovery operation is expected to cost the insurance industry up to $25bn (pounds 15bn), making it one of the most expensive storms in US history.

The streets were strewn with glass blown out of hundreds of windows, potentially deadly debris was flung through the air and there was no phone service.

Roads were transformed to deep, fast flowing rivers littered with boats hurled in from the sea
