Madagascar's Bilateral Relations With China Strong, Chinese Minister

Posted on: Monday, 5 September 2005, 09:00 CDT

Excerpt from report by Malagasy newspaper Madagascar Tribune website on 5 September

While China and the EU are locked in talks over the disagreement about garments held at EU ports, the Sino-Malagasy partnership is in full development phase.

China and the EU have not reached an agreement on the Chinese garments stuck in customs following Chinese exporters exceeding the Shanghai June 2005 agreement to protect EU companies from being swamped by cheap imports after the world quota system came to an end on 1 January 2005.

With regard to Madagascar, friendly cooperation with China has entered a new phase of development said Chinese National Defence Minister Cao Gangchuan on Tuesday [30 August] in Beijing at a meeting with his Malagasy counterpart, Petera Behajaina, during his recent visit to China.

Frequent high-level visits have taken place between China and Madagascar with the strengthening of relations between the armed forces of the two countries, stressed Cao, adding that bilateral military relations would develop further thanks to the joint efforts. [Passage omitted]

For his part, Behajaina said that the two countries had maintained good relations over the past years and the armed forces of the two countries had also developed solid and friendly relations. He also thanked China for its contribution to Madagascar's recent strong economic performance.
