General Motors Corp. and its Canadian union have reached a tentative three-year labor deal, officials said Wednesday.
The agreement between General Motors of Canada and the Canadian Auto Workers includes what the union said were some modest economic gains it obtained in talks with Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG.
Those agreements included base wage increases of 45 cents, 30 cents and 30 cents per hour over the three years, pension improvements and a $70,000 restructuring incentive to encourage senior workers to retire early in cases of downsizing.
GM won the right to introduce more efficient production methods that will result in as many as 300 lost jobs per year, cut its skilled-trades construction crews and reduce the number of workers at two Ontario facilities.
The deal covers about 17,000 workers.
