Delta to Fly Nonstop Between Atlanta and Tel Aviv

Posted on: Saturday, 8 October 2005, 00:00 CDT

By Kirsten Tagami, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Oct. 7--Delta Air Lines' new nonstop daily flights between Atlanta and Tel Aviv will start in March, making Atlanta only the second U.S. gateway to Israel, after New York.

Since filing for bankruptcy reorganization last month, Delta has announced several new flights on international routes, where the company faces little or no competition from low-cost carriers. Much of that international growth will be out of Delta's main hub at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Chief Executive Officer Gerald Grinstein said Thursday.

Meanwhile, Delta is cutting domestic capacity. But the company must keep a strong domestic network to bring passengers to the hubs for the more profitable international flights, Grinstein said.

Grinstein joined Gov. Sonny Perdue and Hartsfield-Jackson General Manager Ben DeCosta at the Carter Center for a kosher-catered reception to announce the new route.

A direct flight to Israel is something the Southeast chapter of the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce has pushed for 12 years, said its president, Tom Glaser. Both U.S. and Israeli business want such service, he said. About 45 Israeli companies have U.S. or regional headquarters in Atlanta, Glaser said.

Georgia exports about $150 million in goods to Israel each year, Grinstein said.

Tourism to Israel has surged this year. Many Christian groups -- especially from the Southeast -- travel to the Holy Land.

Avraham Hirchson, Israel's tourism minister, said the new Delta flight gives people "the opportunity to go from the Bible land to the land of the Bible."
