(U-WIRE) LUBBOCK, Texas -- The home of the Red Raiders may soon have a new name. According to The Associated Press, the Justice Department approved the merger of SBC Communications Inc. with AT&T. The Federal Communications Commission still must sign off on the mergers, and that could come as early as today when the agency meets for its monthly public meeting, according to The AP. Gerald Myers, Texas Tech director of athletics, said Jones SBC Stadium would be renamed to reflect this change. The timing of the change is unknown, but the merger still is pending the approval of the FCC. It is unclear as to what the new name of the stadium will be, but Myers did release this statement: "We are excited about the name change as it will provide a national and global recognition to our stadium and university." According to The Associated Press, the SBC merger, valued at $16 billion, will not be the end of the AT&T name. SBC, based in San Antonio, plans to change its corporate name to the iconic AT&T, company officials said in a story by The AP. That might mean Tech fans will be attending games at Jones AT&T Stadium next season.
