Russian President Vladimir Putin, on a visit to Tokyo, said Monday Japan has agreed to support Russia's bid to join the World Trade Organization.
Putin also called Monday for an expansion of trade and investment between Japan and Russia.
In a speech to Russian and Japanese business leaders, Putin said: The level of trade to Japan is not very high so far, but the trend is positive and the direct foreign investments this year are likely to reach $10 billion. Putin called Japan an important trading partner for Russia.
Russia has finished talks on joining the WTO with 50 countries. It still needs to complete negotiations with eight more countries: the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Malaysia, Philippines, Colombia and Uruguay, the Russian news agency RIA-Novosti reported Monday.
Also Monday, Russia and Japan signed a memorandum on easing visa regulations between the two countries, RIA-Novosti reported.
