Dec. 20--TOKYO -- Honda Motor Co. expects its car sales to have risen some 5 percent in 2005 over the previous year to 3.35 million vehicles worldwide due largely to strong sales in the United States and China, the company's president said Tuesday.
As for 2006, Honda's U.S. car sales are estimated to rise 4 percent to 1.51 million vehicles, and sales in China are seen surging 35 percent to 350,000 vehicles, Takeo Fukui also said.
Fukui did not disclose the company's global sales forecast for 2006.
In the United States, where fuel-efficient subcompacts are selling well because of the recent spike in oil prices, Honda plans to introduce the Fit subcompact in the spring of 2006 in addition to its all-new Civic, strengthening the lineup with excellent fuel economy and environmental performance, the automaker said.
The company is boosting its output capacity in China in the belief that car sales there will likely exceed those in Japan in 2006 and will launch its luxury Acura brand next year in China, it said.
Honda aims to bolster domestic sales, which are expected to have dropped 3.1 percent to 720,000 vehicles in 2005, by revamping its sales networks.
It will also consider increasing the capacity for turning out so-called "eco-friendly" engines and hybrid systems in Japan, Fukui added.
