Seoul, Dec. 26 (Jiji Press)--South Korean chipmaker Samsung Electronics Co. is considering supplying NAND high-performance flash memory chips to Japan's Sony Corp. and some other firms, Samsung officials said Monday.
The NAND chips, used widely in electronics such as portable MP3 music players, are enjoying strong growth in demand. Samsung Electronics hopes to increase stable buyers of the chips apparently to secure its top position in the global market.
On the expected chip supply, the Korea Economic Daily earlier reported that Samsung Electronics is poised to supply to Sony a large volume of NAND chips equivalent to more than 20 pct of its total output under a deal to be signed early next year.
Samsung Electronics supplies the chips to Apple Computer Inc. for the U.S. computer firm's iPod portable music player series under a long-term contract. The South Korean firm will be able to improve the profitability of its memory chip business if it adds Sony and other electronics makers to the list of its NAND chip buyers.END
