Horizon Air said today the airline has agreed to purchase two Bombardier Q400 high-speed turboprops that were previously operated by Hainan Airlines Co. LTD, based in the People's Republic of China. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The aircraft will be flown from China to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where they will undergo extensive refurbishing. One of the aircraft is tentatively slated to enter scheduled service by early June and the other by early July. Horizon has not yet finalized plans for where these newest additions to its fleet will be deployed.
Horizon Air was the North American launch customer for the Q400 and currently operates 18 of the aircraft, all of which were acquired new from the manufacturer, Bombardier Aerospace of Canada. Horizon also operates 28 Bombardier 37-seat Q200 turboprops and 20 Bombardier 70-seat CRJ-700 regional jets. Horizon has 12 additional Q400s on order with Bombardier, with deliveries scheduled to begin late this year and continue through the first half of 2007.
Founded in 1981 and celebrating its 25th anniversary on Sept. 1, 2006, Horizon today serves 46 cities throughout California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and British Columbia and Alberta. In 2005, Horizon flew 6.5 million passengers, a portion of these on flights operated as Frontier JetExpress under contract to Denver-based Frontier Airlines. Together, Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines serve more than 80 cities and are subsidiaries of Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:ALK).
