Moscow, 11 February: British Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown has congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on economic policy successes.
"As far as I know, you managed to achieve a 6-per-cent growth of GDP in 2005," he said. "Six and a half per cent," Putin corrected him. "This is a good impetus for everybody," Brown said. "I am looking forward to the development of our relations in trade and other areas." London is especially interested in "the work which Russia is planning to do as part of the G8 on energy security". "You have chosen the subject very well," Gordon Brown said.
Speaking about the G8 consultations in Moscow, Brown said that the participants "managed to achieve great progress in selecting subjects which will be the focus of attention at the St Petersburg summit". For instance, the ministers supported the issue of energy security, which had been put forward by Russia, and the possibility of working with developing countries on this issue. "All these proposals have been supported not only by the G8 but also by other countries," Brown concluded.
The president greeted the chancellor, emphasizing that Brown "supports the main direction of the discussion at the forthcoming G8 summit in St Petersburg". "I would like to assure you that during the discussion at the G8 summit in St Petersburg we intend to adhere to continuity on those themes which we believe to be a priority before preparations for the forthcoming G8 summit in St Petersburg," Putin stressed. "I am talking about maintaining the education level in developing countries, especially in the poorest countries, debt relief for the poorest countries and maintaining stability on the world energy markets."
For his part, Brown said that all G8 members support Russia's chairmanship plan. "We are especially interested in the work which you are planning to do as part of the G8 on energy security," he added.
