Ethiopian Airlines to implement E-ticketing
ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian Airlines said Saturday it has signed a 10.5-million-U.S.-dollar agreement for its passenger management system with the U.S. firm Sabre Airline Solutions, including facilitating the full implementation of electronic-ticketing (e-ticketing).
Under the agreement issued by Girma Wake, CEO of the Ethiopian Airlines, Sabre Airline Solutions will supply passenger management systems, such as online booking, frequent flyer services and pricing management.
Though the Ethiopian Airlines has not yet begun e-ticketing, it introduced online booking in October 2002. Over 4,000 passengers have used the website of the Ethiopian Airlines to book for flights since then.
Sabre Airline Solutions, one of the three firms under the Texas- based Sabre Holdings, has a SabreSonic e-ticketing hub that 38 carriers participate in, including American Airlines, U.S. Airways, British Airways, Qantas, Airways Iberia, and Japan Airlines.
The firm will provide its SabreSonic reservations system and SabreSonic passenger solutions technology platform to the Ethiopian Airlines. The systems will enhance the marketing, sales and customer services of the Ethiopian Airlines.
The Ethiopian Airlines expects to replace the current system, provided by the French company, SITA, since 1981, and begin using Sabre's by the end of 2006.
The Ethiopian Airlines selected Sabre to handle its passenger management system after a year-long study of 11 system suppliers.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA), governing body of the travel industry, decided at its 60th annual general meeting, held in June 2004 in Singapore, that all ticketing transactions will be electronic as of Dec. 31, 2007.
The Ethiopian Airlines is a major international air carrier and the largest African Airline. It offers convenient service from the United States, Europe and Asia.
It provides domestic and international air service between Ethiopia and other countries. It has a good safety record and is one of the few profitable African airlines. It also provides training and maintenance to more than a dozen African and middle eastern airlines.
