Brits Grounded As Storms Hit US

February 13, 2006

HUNDREDS of British air passengers faced delays after severe snowstorms hit the United States.

The storm hit cities along the north east seaboard, leaving up to 2ft of snow in some areas.

The harsh weather caused the cancellation of some flights to and from Newark, John F Kennedy and Boston airports today.

Air companies told passengers to travel to airports for their flights as normal, but to check for possible delays online or by telephone first.

British Airways said three return flights from Heathrow – to Newark, JFK and Boston – were cancelled yesterday.

But a spokeswoman said: “Passengers should turn up to airports as normal because some flights are still operating.”

A Virgin Atlantic spokes-woman said although some flights were affected yesterday, services were expected to return to normal today.

A spokeswoman for BAA, which runs airports including Heathrow, Gat-wick and Glasgow, said passengers should check with their airline before travelling.

The snowstorms could delay the extradition of Neil Entwistle to the US until the middle of this week. Entwistle, aged 2 7, is waiting to be extradited to face trial for the murder of his wife, a one-time teacher in the Midlands, and nine-month-old baby daughter.

But Paul Dunne, assistant chief deputy for the Boston marshals office, said weather could cause a delay because marshals are unlikely to fly to England until later this week.
