RENTON (AP) -- Boeing Co. rolled out its 5,000th 737 jet on Monday, touting it as the most successful aircraft in commercial aviation history.
Its fuel efficiency, quick turnaround times and ability to operate from small airports spawned discount carriers, making air travel affordable enough for the middle class. Southwest Airlines Co., the world's biggest low-cost airline, took delivery of the 5,000th plane at Boeing's factory in Renton.
Thousands of guests, including Boeing and Southwest executives, were on hand to celebrate.
Last year, Boeing took orders for more than 570 of the single- aisle planes, marking the first time more than 500 orders had been placed in one year for any Boeing commercial jetliner.
With 45 orders so far in 2006, airlines are waiting on more than 1,100 737 planes that have been ordered but not yet delivered.
The 737 entered airline service in 1968. Today, more than 4,000 of the short- to medium-range planes are in service.
It comes in several different models, accommodating anywhere from 110 to 189 passengers.
The 737 has carried an estimated 12 billion travelers nearly 75 billion miles.
