Lufthansa and Air France Expand Service Eastward International Traveler / Update: FRANKFURT

The Cologne-based airline Lufthansa said Monday that it was raising its midyear seating capacity in Europe by 4.6 percent as it confronts rapidly expanding discounters like Ryanair. Lufthansa's Star Alliance partner, Austrian Airlines Group, is also looking eastward and is adding flights to the Czech Republic, Russia, Ukraine, Romania and Hungary this year
. Air France-KLM and Lufthansa have added routes and capacity to the Middle East and Russia to benefit from those regions' oil boom and growing travel demand among former Soviet republics. Air France-KLM said it was boosting capacity to the Middle East by 19.7 percent. The airline will begin flying daily from Paris to Tehran, and frequencies will be increased to Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; Nouakchott, Mauritania; and N'Djamena, Chad. Lufthansa will add twice-weekly flights starting March 26 between Frankfurt and Astana, capital of Kazakhstan, and will boost frequencies to Almaty, the former capital, the carrier said in an e-mailed statement. Lufthansa is also starting a new route between Munich and St. Petersburg with daily service starting April 22.Source: International Herald Tribune
