Computer glitch causes delays at airports in New York area

NEW YORK, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Flights were delayed in the New York metropolitan area for up to two hours because of a computer glitch in the air traffic control center, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials said Tuesday.

The trouble, which started around 2 p.m., affected flights at Newark, LaGuardia, and Teterboro airports. The FAA had to go to the backup system about half an hour later, agency spokeswoman Laura Brown said.

Despite earlier reports, the airports did not lose their radar system. The Federal Aviation Administration says a glitch in computer software that monitors high-altitude flights caused the problems.

Air traffic controllers are using a back-up computer system and are calling airports to alert them of planes moving into their airspace while the main system is repaired.
