Vietnam Upgrades Airport in Northwest for "Civil, Military Purposes"

Hanoi, 11 March: The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CVVA) announced on 9 March a master plan to develop the Dien Bien Airport in the northwestern province of Dien Bien till 2015 and 2025 with an investment capital of 530bn VND (33.1m USD).
According to CVVA Deputy Head Pham Quy Tieu, 148bn VND (9.2m USD) will be spent to upgrade the airport's aviation standards during the first phase of development.
In the second phase, the airport will be expanded to 1,208 ha for both civil and military purposes.
The airport is expected to serve 200,000 passengers annually in the first phase and 300,000 passengers in the second phase.
In 2006, the airport will continue conducting 10-14 flights per week on the Hanoi-Dien Bien route. It also offers flights to Kunming (China), Chiang Mai (Thailand) and other destinations in the Mekong river sub-region.
In the first two months of 2006, over 4,000 passengers and thousands tonnes of goods were handled by the Dien Bien airport.
