Legerity Introduces First On-Chip Carrier Class Integrated Line Testing Product

Posted on: Wednesday, 15 March 2006, 12:00 CST

Legerity, Inc., the "V" in VoIP(TM), today announced at Spring VON 2006 the availability of the LineCare(TM) advanced integrated line testing software for its carrier class, Ve790 series devices. With this latest offering, digital telecommunications carriers can monitor networked subscriber lines with less capital expenditure by eliminating the need for costly network monitoring test head equipment. LineCare allows for monitoring, testing and diagnosis from the service provider to the customer premise.

The Ve790 integrated LineCare line test eliminates the need for expensive test head equipment by integrating the line test functionality within the chipset via silicon and software offerings. The new offering is the only testing solution that supports both GR909 and GR844 testing requirements.

Current industry standard practice for testing network communication lines, known as metallic loop testing, involves large and expensive test head equipment. In addition to size and cost, many service providers are now deploying to remote locations, meaning that test head equipment must be transported via truck in order to test the line. With the Legerity LineCare solution, all line testing, monitoring and diagnosis can be done from the central office by directly accessing the line card itself.

In addition to eliminating the need for expensive test heads, the validated test packages offered by Legerity reduce customer time to market and allow for a best-in-class solution that performs accurate line test measurements. LineCare is offered in three distinct test packages, the GR909 (Basic), the GR844 (Advanced) and the GR844 with Calibration (Advanced Plus). Greater accuracy can be achieved by using the Advanced Plus package through the in-service and/or in-factory calibration functionality. The ability to utilize such advanced line testing functionality in a single chipset is essential to carrier class line card developers, where the need for more complex, low cost cards has become a competitive necessity.

"By directly including Legerity's LineCare advanced integrated line testing software, UTStarcom is able to both improve its time-to-market and offer a product with cost-saving functionality, while meeting all requirements for call monitoring and line testing," said Vishal Gupta, Broadband Access Networks Product Manager for UTStarcom.

"The introduction of these new software packages and evaluation platforms will save our carrier-class customers significant system cost and time," said Jacques Issa, senior director of marketing and applications for Legerity. "For network carriers, the software provides the answer to the problem of cost effectively monitoring networked subscriber lines."

The VE790 series is focused on carrier applications, including central office, Voice Enabled DSLAMs, Broadband DLCs and FTTP. It is designed to complement the Ve880 series, the other half of the VoiceEdge Architecture focused on consumer VoIP applications, such as voice-enabled cable and DSL modems.
