Mar. 17–The Summit-Akron Solid Waste Management Authority has approved new contracts for recycling electronic equipment and office paper.
The authority has signed an agreement for 2006 with RET3 Job Corps of Cleveland to recycle computers, televisions and other electronic gear. The nonprofit group will be paid as much as $28,550.
Last year, RET3 recycled 54,737 pounds of old televisions and 93,067 pounds of old computers, said authority spokeswoman Marcie Kress.
The electronic equipment is recycled at the Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Center in Stow from April through September.
Also on Tuesday, the authority’s governing board approved a contract of up to $35,000 with the Acroa Corp. to recycle office paper.
The program grew last year from 39 to 70 participating companies and recycled nearly 200,000 pounds of paper and cardboard.
This year, the program will handle only office paper, said authority Executive Director Yolanda Walker.
The authority is dropping the price it pays to Acroa from 4 cents a pound to 3.75 cents a pound, she said.
In other action, the board saluted two Revere High School students for their winning entry in a billboard-design contest.
The work of Matt White and Sean Goodman was chosen the top entry in a countywide contest that drew 275 entries from eight schools. They used the slogan, "Future Generations Don’t Have A Choice. You Do." The white letters are next to a red recycling symbol on a black field.
The Revere entry will be placed April 3 on a billboard along Brecksville Road near state Route 176 in Richfield.
Top entries will be displayed in May at the Akron-Summit County Public Library.
