Mar. 21--US Airways announced plans Monday to offer daily nonstop flights between Portland and Philadelphia.
The new service, scheduled to begin June 1, will give Portland International Airport its fourth nonstop connection to the East Coast. United Airlines flies to Washington Dulles, Continental Airlines goes to Newark and JetBlue Airways began service to New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport last May.
Like JetBlue, US Airways will fly Airbus A320 aircraft on red-eye flights from Portland. The return from Philadelphia will depart in the evening.
Valerie Wunder, a US Airways spokeswoman, said passengers will be able to connect to European, Caribbean and Latin American destinations through the airline's Philadelphia hub.
The new flight will be operated by America West Airlines, which merged with US Airways in September. Still flying under separate names, the two financially troubled airlines constitute the fifth-largest domestic carrier.
Wunder said revenue and scheduling opportunities "made Portland a very attractive market for us."
The Port of Portland, which operates PDX, said 77,000 passengers flew connecting flights between Portland and Philadelphia last year. A Port spokesman, Steve Johnson, said the figure represented 16 percent growth from 2004.
PDX saw a record number of passengers last year -- 13.9 million -- in rebounding from the airline travel slowdown after 9/11.
