Cardinals to Open New Stadium Hosting Super Bowl Champs: Day Game Vs. Pittsburgh Aug. 12

By Darren Urban, The Tribune, Mesa, Ariz.

Mar. 28--The first NFL game in Cardinals Stadium will feature the Super Bowl champions on a Saturday afternoon.

Opening their domed, airconditioned new digs with emphasis, the Cardinals host the Pittsburgh Steelers in Glendale Aug. 12 for a day game.

Previous home preseason games were always played in the evening because of the heat at Sun Devil Stadium.

"With the air conditioning at the new Cardinals Stadium we are able to do a lot of things that we couldn't do previously," vice president Michael Bidwill said in a statement.

The rest of the Cardinals' schedule -- both for the preseason and the regular season -- will be released in the first two weeks of April.

The Cards already know they won't be in any national television games the first weekend of the regular season.

The NFL announced those games Monday, with the Steelers hosting the Dolphins on Sept. 7, a Thursday.

A handful of possible firstweekend opponents for the Cardinals have already been eliminated, since the Cowboys (in Jacksonville the initial Sunday of Sept. 10), the Vikings (in Washington Sept. 11 to open ESPN's Monday Night Football), and the Chargers and Raiders (facing each other in the second of a Monday Night doubleheader) already have games scheduled.

All four teams will appear on the Cardinals' schedule this season.

The first Sunday night telecast on NBC will feature the Colts visiting the New York Giants in a matchup of Peyton Manning and Eli Manning.

The Thanksgiving Day tripleheader was also announced.

Miami will be at Detroit, Tampa Bay at Dallas, and the NFL Network's first Thanksgiving night telecast will feature Denver at Kansas City.
