Vietnamese official to be suspended from post due to scandal involvement

HANOI, March 29 (Xinhua) -- The Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security has proposed the government to suspend a deputy transport minister from his post to further investigate his responsibility in a scandal in his ministry's unit, local newspaper Youth reported Wednesday.

The Ministry of Public Security on Tuesday sent reports to the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee ( CPVCC) and the government on derogations of Deputy Transport Minister Nguyen Viet Tien, who has been alleged to intentionally act counter to state regulations in managing public assets at his ministry's Project Management Unit No. 18 (PMU18) and lack responsibility in managing the use of foreign and domestic investment in the ministry's projects.

Also on Tuesday, Vietnamese investigation agency summoned chief accountant and another official of the unit to question issues on wrongdoings of the PMU18 and the deputy minister.

Telling reporters on Tuesday, the deputy minister said he has not intended to resign, but Transport Minister Dao Dinh Binh should do this after the unit's scandal.

The unit's general director named Bui Tien Dung, office vice manager, and a vice general director of the Vietnam Expressway Corporation under the ministry, have made bets of millions of U.S. dollars via a transnational soccer betting ring.

After being detained in January for gambling, Bui Tien Dung was prosecuted by the Investigation Agency for three charges, namely gambling, giving bribery, and intentionally acting counter to state regulations in economic management.

According to initial investigation, Dung made total bets of nearly 2.4 million dollars within two months via the betting ring run by Bui Quang Hung, driver of the director of the Hanoi Traffic Police Bureau. The general director has allegedly used state assets like cars wastefully and for personal purposes.

After the negative case, the government has asked localities, sectors and ministries to inspect key projects, especially those in the transport and irrigation fields.
