Seymour Studies Extending Sewer Past U.S. 31

Mar. 29--Seymour officials are studying whether the city should extend sewer service east of U.S. 31.

Seymour Board of Public Works and Safety tabled Thursday a sewer connection for an existing home near U.S. 31 and County Road 400 North south of city limits because of concerns with extending sewer service east of the highway.

"We haven't dug on the east side of 31 yet, and I don't really want to set that precedent," city engineer Jerry Hartsell told board members.

Jimmie Henson told the board that he had a contractor, King Trucking, scheduled to start the work Monday and that he had received all necessary permits from the Indiana Department of Transportation to install a sewer line beneath U.S. 31, Hartsell said Tuesday.

Board member Mike Jordan advised Hartsell to meet with city attorney Jeff Lorenzo to review the situation.

They're exploring city and county ordinances and concerns with whether the current sewage infrastructure west of U.S. 31 can handle new growth on the east side that might follow, Hartsell said.

"We want everything to be sanitary, but we have to know we can handle everything," Hartsell said.

If the sewer connection to Henson's home is approved, it would connect to a sewer line and lift station that handles sewage from Greendale and Pebble Brooke subdivisions south of Seymour.

The Greendale line was built and connected with the city's sewer system because of septic problems in that neighborhood about 10 years ago, Hartsell said.

The only sewer connection east of U.S. 31 is a sewer line and lift station built the Mutton Creek subdivision. That line connects with the city's system at U.S. 31 and U.S. 50, Hartsell said.
