Apr. 1--Daybrook Elementary School students and their families discovered that items found around the house can be used to measure things during a special "Math Around the House" session earlier this month.
Students and parents used paperclips to measure height. Students lay on a brightly colored rug while family members carefully placed paperclips end-to-end along them.
Taking part in this activity were Noah and Wendy Lemley, Meredith Barr, Brenna Brummage, Kodi Propst, Josh Lemley, Cannon Brummage, Gunner Brummage and Kim Brummage.
"I was given several ideas that we could realistically do in the home," parent Tamara Ammons said.
Title I teachers Jennifer Palmer and Susan Taylor coordinated the event, designed to involve families in their children's education.
Other activities included learning fractions with candy bars, tally marks with cotton swabs, and snackfood math.
Palmer and Taylor were very pleased that the families of half of Daybrook Elementary's students turned out for the event. Parents were given a packet of hands-on activities to try at home. Each child received a free book.
Daybrook's three Partners in Education, Chisler, Eastern Associated Coal and Randy's Welding and Fabricating, provided pizza and drinks for the families. The Family Math Night is held each year as part of the Title I program.
Title I is a federally funded program to provide additional math and reading training in schools meeting federal guidelines.
