Philippine to ensure safety before new airport terminal opens: official

MANILA, April 2 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government will ensure that the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 ( NAIA 3) is safe before opening it to the public, Press Secretary and Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye said on Sunday, one week after a part of the Terminal collapsed.

In his weekly column The View From The Palace, set for publishing on Monday, Bunye said authorities are still investigating the collapse of a portion of the ceiling of the newly constructed terminal building on March 27.

"Safety will always be our primary concern and we assure the public that an independent probe is underway on the collapse of a portion of the NAIA Terminal 3's ceiling," Bunye said in a separate statement.

He added that the government will first ensure that all facilities within the international airport are safe before NAIA-3 begins operations.

"It is essential that this airport facility live up to the standards of the best airports in the world. The Department of Transportation and Communication and the Manila International Airport Authority are leading the way forward for this to happen," he said.

He said NAIA-3 would be opened within the year after the repair of the damaged ceiling.

On March 27, one part of the Terminal's inner ceiling measured nearly 100 square meters fell on the floor in the arrival's area. The incident caused no casualties because the Terminal was not open for use since it was finished by a German constructor more than three years ago.

A legal dispute was settled last year between the constructor and the Philippine government by the Supreme Court, making way for the Terminal's actual service. However, for quality and bureaucratic reasons, the scheduled opening on March 31 became impossible.
