Micron Eyes New Market for Chips: Home Security Cameras Could Use Image Sensors

Apr. 4--To protect your home, you might buy a personal security system for about $200 or $300. If you buy it in the next year or two, its security cameras might use image sensors from Boise-based Micron Technology Inc.

Micron's image sensors are already used in camera phones, digital cameras and automobiles. Now, the company is trying to break into the growing security-camera market.

Micron said Monday it is repackaging some of its image sensors so they can be installed in security cameras.

One analyst said it's a good move for Micron to target the security-camera market while that market is growing.

More than 17 million security cameras were shipped worldwide last year, and the industry is expected to grow at least 8 percent a year, said Brian O'Rourke, senior analyst with In-Stat, a technology research firm in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Micron said its image-sensor chips mostly will cater to the home-based security systems that people can buy at big-box retailers. Micron manufactures its image sensor chips at its Boise plant and several other facilities around the world before selling the chips to manufacturers that make the security cameras.

"In the last 18 months or so, we've seen a significant shift to the adoption of personal networks or home-based networks used in small retail stores or small offices," said Paul Gallagher, director of new market development in Micron's imaging group. "Those networks are very inexpensive and very easy to use."

Micron wants to tap into that market by offering a low-cost image sensor that is still "on par with a camcorder" in quality, Gallagher said. The company will sell chips to companies that make home-based security networks, he said.
