Statewide Warning Against Outdoor Fires Remains in Effect

Posted on: Wednesday, 5 April 2006, 12:00 CDT

By Kelly Davis, The State, Columbia, S.C.

Apr. 5--A weather system earlier this week failed to bring much moisture to South Carolina and a Red Flag fire alert remains in effect statewide, state Forestry Commission officials said.

The alert, which does not prohibit outdoor burning, but warns against it until wildfire danger subsides, is in effect statewide, commission spokesman Ken Cabe said Wednesday.

In some places, including Lexington County, local ordinances tied to Red Flag alerts ban outdoor burning until the alert is lifted.

A weather system Monday brought high winds but little rain to South Carolina. The winds fanned more than 40 woods fires across the state, including a 90-acre blaze in Lexington County, Cabe said.

The same warm, dry and breezy conditions are expected for the next few days. They could make outdoor fires difficult to control.

Visit the S.C. Forestry Commission Web site [http://www.state.sc.us/forest/fire.htm] for information about outdoor burning.
