Memorial Set for Marine Killed in Iraq

Apr. 14–HAWKINSVILLE — In addition to flying flags at half staff Thursday, Pulaski County residents are planning to hold a memorial ceremony in recognition of a former resident killed in Iraq.

Mike Sinyard, commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, said Thursday will be declared Kun Y. Kim Day. Kim, 20, attended Hawkinsville High School and still has family in the community, though the military lists his hometown as Atlanta.

He and two other Marines were killed by a bomb April 2.

Sinyard said local community members were mistakenly told that Kim’s funeral would be Thursday of next week. He found out when it was too late, he said, that the funeral was actually held Thursday of this week in Atlanta.

Nevertheless, he said, the community will go forward with plans to honor Kim on Thursday.

Local governments plan to fly flags at half staff, Sinyard said, and there will be a memorial service at Veterans Memorial Park in Hawkinsville at 11 a.m.
