May 7--Cabarrus Neighbors columnist Dale Nixon won three writing awards at the North Carolina Press Club's annual spring conference April 22 in Raleigh.
The organization is an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women.
Nixon, a Concord resident, won first place in the humorous personal columns category for her March 13 column, "Hot flash: Time to get crazy."
In the column, Nixon told how an estrogen patch helped her overcome embarrassing hot flashes, only to have her doctor later recommend she stop using it.
Nixon received second place in the general personal column category for her Aug. 14 column, "I simply treasure my dear girlfriends."
"They are the ones who will tell me the truth but will spare me the pain," she wrote in her ode to friendship. "They are the ones who make me feel young because they count the good times instead of the wrinkles each time we meet."
Nixon also won a third-place award for "Homes of Tomorrow," a story she wrote for Lake Norman Magazine.
Nearly 90 awards were presented in categories covering reporting, photography, editing and writing.
All first place award-winning entries have been submitted for judging in the communications competition sponsored by the National Federation of Press Women. Winners will be announced in September.
