Citizenship Rally Gets Heated

May 7, 2006

May 7–VICTORVILLE — Tensions were high during the pro-citizenship rally Friday on Bear Valley Road, at one point escalating to a shouting match with two Hispanic men waving a Mexican flag.

More than 100 people gathered on the 15100 block of Bear Valley Road with American flags and pro-America signs during the “Celebrate Citizenship” rally sponsored by 59th Assembly candidate Berry Hartz.

The rally was peaceful until the two Hispanic males drove by holding a Mexican flag. The crowd began booing, and when the car stopped at a traffic light, an obscenity-laden shouting match ensued. Several people in the crowd yelled, “Go back to Mexico,” to the Hispanic men.

“Some say Americans don’t want to take these jobs (illegal immigrants do),” said Tom Trull of Hesperia. “For every immigrant who took Monday off, we should replace them with high school kids. If all else fails, we could shoot them.”

Rally participant Donna Lane of Hesperia said she was tired of illegal immigrants “taking over our hospitals and schools and getting free benefits we can’t get.”

“It’s time we stand up for ourselves,” she said.

Joyce and Clifford Lacy of Apple Valley, whose son was killed in Iraq in 2004, said they attended the rally to support their fellow Americans.

“One reason my son went into the military was because no one would hire him,” Clifford Lacy said. “Everyone kept telling him they could go down to the corner and get two (illegal immigrants) cheaper.”

Hartz said his rally was about showing that “somebody is doing something positive” to support American citizenship.
