Ranchero/I-15 Interchange Moves Closer: City Council Awards EIR Contract; Project Expected to Open in 2010

May 9--Although the Ranchero Underpass under the BNSF railroad is still in the "coming soon" phase, the Hesperia City Council last week moved ahead on the next portion of their plan for the "Ranchero corridor."
The council awarded a contract to prepare a report of the environmental impact of an interchange between Ranchero Road and Interstate 15 to the Parsons engineering firm.
The $790,386 contract exceeds the $750,000 provided for this phase of the project in the city's Fiscal Year 2005-2006 Budget. The difference will be requested in the budgets for the next two fiscal years. At the recommendation of city staff, the council also approved an additional 10 percent, or $79,614, as a contingency against unplanned future expenses.
Although the city of Hesperia is the lead agency on the project, Caltrans and the Federal Highway Administration are also involved. Federal law requires each stage of a highway construction project must be completed before the next step -- in this case, studying right-of-way issues and construction costs -- can even be begun.
The Ranchero Road/I-15 interchange is expected to be open to the public in 2010 or soon thereafter.
