May 11--Dear Action Line: Where can I take electronic equipment for disposal? I'm coming to Tulsa to donate this stuff and need addresses for recyclers and resellers. -- L.B., Stroud.
Oklahoma Computer Recyclers: This electronics recycler and data security firm, at 12611 E. 60th St., operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Call them at 459-0836. Manager Scott Metzger said the company takes in 10 tons a week of electronics, including computer-related material, office equipment and appli-ances. They don't accept refrigerators or televisions.
The company offers corporate customers data security and eradication services and works for medical facilities that are concerned about federal health record privacy laws. It cleans hard drives or destroys them.
It's a push: The company accepts the equipment as payment for its recycling service. Some equipment is refurbished for sale, but less than 3 percent of what comes in is something anyone would want in its present state, Metzger said. Older computers are simply scrapped.
"We tear them apart. The metal goes to Borg Steel. The circuit boards go to a precious metals and copper recovery operation. The hard drives are smelted for their aluminum, and the plastic goes to a plastic recycler here in town," he said.
"We're also extremely proud of the fact that less than 3 percent of what comes in here winds up in the Dumpster," Metzger said. "We're big on keeping this stuff out of the landfills."
