May 15--What's in a nickname?
Austin College Kangaroos
(Sherman)
The ties to Kangaroos dates to the 1850s, when freshmen were tried in mock trials called Kangaroo Kourts. The courts were stopped in 1915, but the fascination with kangaroos wasn't. A live kangaroo named "Pat" was purchased in 1922, died in 1924 and was replaced by Pat II. After Pat II died, the student body decided living conditions in Texas were not ideal for kangaroos. The next (and final) live kangaroo, Katy, was purchased in 1950 and lived until 1960.

Adopt-A-Cat
Terence Green, the Official Cat of Two Bits, above, will answer questions every week throughout the season.
Two Bits: You're playing 96 games in 108 days. How many of those days is your arm so sore that you really don't want to throw a baseball?
Green: Really, none of them. Your arm gets tired, but it never gets to the point that you don't want to pick up a ball. As a matter of fact, my rookie year, we played 112 games. I wish we could play 112 regular-season games.

Magic number
I don't know why we're not running this chart with the baseball standings yet, but I'll include it here:
AL WEST W L Pct. GB Texas 19 17 .528 - Oakland 18 19 .486 1.5
Rangers' magic number: 125
Random question of the week
Have you ever noticed that every time -- and I do mean every time -- during a basketball game when one team has a fast break but the player with the ball pulls up and sets up the half-court offense, one of the announcers always notes that was "a smart decision?"
The injury report
Checking the pulse on the sports world:
Cleared to play: Onterrio "The Original Whizzinator" Smith, above, for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Probable: Felipe Alou used at least one "please" when talking to Barry Bonds about moving from fourth to third in the Giants' batting order.
Questionable: Rick Sutcliffe's thought process when he sat down for that interview in San Diego.
Doubtful: Mark Cuban's blog gets tamer after his latest fine.
Out: Annika Sorenstam, out on the weekend for the first time since 2002.
Day-to-day: All of us.
Name Game
Nine players have won Colonial more than once. How many can you name?
Aisle 6
We need a cleanup on Aisle 6. Immediately. That's where you'll find the mess that is the Kansas City Royals.
Cleaning up
