May 15--DUARTE -- Duarte residents will get their first look at design and art elements for the proposed Duarte Gold Line Station on Tuesday.
Residents will be able to talk to the artists at a workshop scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Duarte Senior Center, 1610 Huntington Drive.
The planned station location is Duarte Road west of Highland Avenue, adjacent to the City of Hope National Medical Center and Lewis Business Park.
Duarte officials have committed $5 million in local matching funds for construction of the Gold Line, platform, parking and station design.
The station will feature a 270-foot-long platform centered between two sets of tracks and 125 parking spaces.
Andrea Myklebust and Staton Gray Sears, Wisconsin-based artists, were selected from among 20 artists to help design the station.
The pair have extensive experience with transit and infrastructure projects, including the design of two light-rail stations at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
For a year, Duarte's seven-member Station Design Art Review Committee has been working with the artists to come up with architectural elements.
Those elements, which represent Duarte's history and culture, include columns, gateways, shade structures, fences and sculpted seating.
Kathryn Lim is the project architect who will blend the various ideas, artistic elements and pedestrian links into a functional light rail station.
The Metro Gold Line Construction Authority was formed in 1999 to design and build a light rail line from Los Angeles to Montclair.
The first phase of the project, which linked Union Station in downtown Los Angeles to South Pasadena and Pasadena, opened July 26, 2003.
The Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension will link those three cities with Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, Azusa, Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, Pomona, Claremont and Montclair.
