Business Columnist Wins Award: Miller's Work Beat Out 146 Other Newspapers

May 16--Ledger-Enquirer business columnist Susan Miller was given a "Best in Business" award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers recently at its 12th annual Best in Business contest.

Miller, who is the director of the Cunningham Sales Institute at Columbus State University, has been writing her column as part of the Small Business Challenge since January 2005. Her columns competed against 146 other newspapers from around the U.S. with daily circulations up to 125,000. The Ledger-Enquirer has about 44,000 weekday and 52,000 Sunday subscribers.

Miller accepted her award at the SABEW annual conference in Minneapolis. Judges for Miller's column included business writers and editors from Fortune and Business Week magazines, as well as the Akron Beacon-Journal.

"This has been some of the most fun writing I've ever done," said Miller, although, she admits, that some weeks Tuesday arrives pretty quickly. "It's nice when your experience falls into place and allows you to do something worthwhile.

"Being recognized by industry peers makes this a pretty special award, too, but the best part is hearing from small business owners who tell us how helpful the columns are and how they're using them to improve their businesses."

SABEW is the largest association for business writers and editors in North America. The organization launched the annual Best in Business contest in 1995 to help set standards and recognize the role models for outstanding business journalism.
