Follow Cary Academy Students in China

May 17, 2006

By Roger Van Der Horst, The News & Observer, Raleigh, N.C.

May 17–Ming-An Lee, a Chinese teacher, and a dozen of her Cary Academy students will leave next week for an 18-day trip to China. A few of the juniors will write about and photograph their experiences for a blog on The News & Observer’s Web site. They will visit Shanghai, Hang Zhou, Yellow Mountain, the Lake of a Thousand Islands, Xi’an, Zheng Zhou and Beijing. In Zheng Zhou, the students will stay with Chinese host families.

Two of them will remain in Beijing for another two weeks to work as interns for NCR Corp., a technology and data warehousing solutions company. They’ll continue to blog from there.

In her journal, Diana Chiritescu of Morrisville writes about trying not to forget anything essential: “Deodorant and dental floss should definitely be packed. … The majority of stores in China don’t carry them. … Hand sanitizer should be brought everywhere: Most restrooms don’t have soap, and some may not have a sink. Kleenex packs also come in handy when it comes to bathrooms; many restrooms don’t have toilet paper.”

Look for the first blog entry Thursday, by Cary Academy junior Alanna Daley, and subsequent entries online at blogs.newsobserver.com/china.
