By Sergio Chapa, The Brownsville Herald, Texas

May 17--Texas State Bank in downtown Brownsville was robbed Tuesday by a man claiming to have a gun, police said.

Investigators said the unidentified man walked into the bank, 629 E. Elizabeth St., around 3 p.m. Tuesday, waited in line and then presented a handwritten note in English to a teller that stated, "I have a gun, put money in the bag."

Brownsville Police Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique said they are searching for a heavyset Hispanic male who was wearing a maroon shirt, black jeans and a Houston Texans ballcap.

Manrrique said the alleged bank robber handed over an IBC bank bag and then displayed what appeared to be a handgun.

The teller gave the unidentified man an undetermined amount of money before he left through the bank's Seventh Street exit.

Dispatch logs show the incident was reported through a silent alarm at 2:53 p.m. Tuesday.

The robbery was originally reported as a silent alarm, according to police dispatch logs.

Police were not sure if the robber acted alone. Manrrique said investigators are reviewing indoor and outdoor video footage from the bank.

Manrrique said the alleged robber is described as a Hispanic male between 5 feet, 10 inches and 6 feet in height and weighing about 250 pounds.

The downtown branch's lobby remained closed to the surprise of many customers Tuesday afternoon.

Texas State Bank officials could not be reached for comment, but employees kept the downtown branch's drive-through windows open for normal business hours Tuesday.

Texas State Bank is headquartered in McAllen.

According to Herald archives, the Tuesday afternoon incident is the first Brownsville bank robbery in more than eight years.
