Ojo(TM) Personal Video Phone Capabilities Expanded to Cover Full Range of Broadband Networks

Posted on: Wednesday, 17 May 2006, 09:05 CDT

WorldGate Communications, Inc. today announced that its Ojo(TM) Personal Video Phone will now operate and deliver high quality video telephone capabilities over a full range of wired and wireless broadband networks, expanding its availability and versatility to a wider group of consumers. Originally designed to operate over conventional broadband cable and DSL networks, Ojo recently announced the ability to operate with satellite networks and now has further expanded the capabilities to operate with a full range of other wired networks including Fiber To The Home (FTTH), Home Plug and Broadband over Power Line (BPL) networks as well as wireless networks including WiFi and WiMax.

"Ojo owners are the first video phone users to enjoy the best of all broadband worlds. Ojo is not only the most true-to-life video phone experience, it is also now the most convenient, because you can locate Ojo almost anywhere," said Hal Krisbergh, Chairman and CEO of WorldGate. He added, "People want flexibility, and we are giving flexibility to Ojo users to the full range of existing broadband networks."

Fiber to the home (FTTH) or Fiber to the premises (FTTP) refers to a broadband telecommunications system based on fiber-optic cables and associated optical electronics for delivery of multiple advanced services such as the telephone, broadband Internet and television to homes and businesses.

Home Plug allows high-speed networking, enabling devices such as PCs to be connected anywhere in the home, without additional wiring, over standard AC power lines.

Broadband over Power Line (BPL) networking is also referred to as Power Line Communications (PLC) and Power Line Broadband (PLB). This technology provides broadband-speed access for homes to the Internet over the power company's distribution wires.

WiFi, also known as the IEEE 802.11 standard, allows wireless connection to the Internet at distances of up to 300 feet from the location of a WiFi base station.

WiMax is a new standards-based wireless technology that is being deployed rapidly around the world. Known as IEEE 802.16, WiMax allows service providers to quickly deliver broadband internet services without having to run cables underground or overhead. Each WiMax tower can support wireless Internet access over a 30-mile radius.
