Defense Technology International (DTI) Reports on the Current and Future Use of Alternative Energy Sources By the U.S. Military

Posted on: Friday, 19 May 2006, 12:10 CDT

NEW YORK, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The latest issue of Aviation Week's Defense Technology International (May/June 2006) features various military efforts to deploy technologies not dependent on oil, including hybrid engines, hydrogen fuel cells, and solar energy.

The Pentagon is the world's single largest oil consumer, and "Going Green" takes a thorough look at U.S., Europe and Scandinavia efforts to lessen oil reliance with the development of quiet hybrid diesel-electric armored vehicles. General Dynamics and BAE Systems are far down the development path, and a hybrid version of the Humvee is being tested, but after millions of dollars and years of research, the technology is not quite ready for prime time.

Further investigation of energy alternatives include: * The research that is underway to develop small fuel cells that supplement or replace mil-spec batteries in the growing number of hand-held electronic devices on the battlefield. DTI reports scientists are looking at applications as complex as unmanned aerial vehicles and as mundane as laptop computers. * How the sun can be used to power military applications. The Missile Defense Agency's high-altitude airship prototype will use thin-film photovoltaic cells for propulsion and other functions in an unmanned airship that's projected to fly in the summer of 2009. Additional features in the May/June issue: * The next generation of electrically-driven, solid-state directed energy lasers; * The U.S. Navy's plans for directed energy lasers utilizing advanced electric-propulsion systems that can generate megawatts electricity; * New European efforts to curb improvised explosive devices (IEDs), including advanced in robotics; and, * DRS Technologies CEO Mark S. Newman explains the company's growth and acquisitions strategy.
