May 24--The World Affairs Council of Dallas-Fort Worth said Wednesday that Richard Holbrooke has canceled his Thursday luncheon address for personal reasons. It will be rescheduled later.

Mr. Holbrooke is a former assistant secretary of state for European affairs, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, U.S. ambassador to Germany and President Clinton's special envoy to Cyprus. He's a frequent guest on various Sunday morning talk shows.

Cancer survivor

The public is invited to hear Dallas County District Judge Karen Greene discuss "Living with the Fear of Recurrence" at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Gilda's Club North Texas headquarters, 2710 Oak Lawn Ave.

The event is free, but reservations are requested. Call the club at 214-219-8877 so organizers can get a head count.

Judge Green will give a personal account of her six-year battle with Stage III-b breast cancer. Fears of recurrence can be debilitating for cancer survivors, she said.

"It is helpful for people going through the disease to see survivors, because we hope to show them that to survive is to thrive," Judge Greene said.

"I'm a walking example of what that looks like because I am supposed to be dead."

Judge Greene will offer practical tips on physical and emotional health by discussing three points: What is fear? What triggers fear? What are the coping mechanisms?

There will also be a question-and-answer session.

Justinian Award

Sam Burford, a partner at Thompson & Knight LLP and former mayor of Highland Park, recently received the Justinian Award from the Dallas Lawyers Auxiliary.

The award recognizes a practicing attorney who has made outstanding contributions to the community over a significant number of years.

Mr. Burford is past president of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and continues to devote a considerable amount of time and effort on the club's behalf.

Grace Ann Vanderpool, president of the auxiliary, made the presentation. Beverly Holmes and Anne Martin were co-chairwomen.

Retired Texas Supreme Court Justice Tom Phillips delivered the keynote address.

The auxiliary also celebrated its 80th birthday recently. Twenty-three former presidents were there as well as members of the Dallas Bar Association.

Mary Lee Cox and Ann Vendig co-chaired the birthday celebration.

Special guests included members of the Dallas judiciary plus Kitty O'Reilley, Washington, D.C., president of the American Lawyers Auxiliary; Mark Sales, president of the Dallas Bar Association; and Elizabeth Lee, granddaughter of founding president Edna Victoria Fisher Foree.
