May 25--Nine local people are being recognized for their achievement in the cable and telecommunications industry.
The Rocky Mountain chapter of Women in Cable and Telecommunications (WICT) is scheduled to hold its annual Walk of Fame Gala tonight. Debbie Egner of Douglas County-based Starz Entertainment Group and Nancy McGee of Greenwood Village- based Adelphia Communications have been named Women of the Year.
The top award acknowledges women who have significantly affected the cable and telecommunications industry and is held in high regard by peers, clients and employees. Winners were nominated by fellow industry colleagues.
Egner, 48, senior vice president for affiliate sales and sales operations for Starz, joined the company five years ago, after a 15-year tenure with HBO.
"Being Woman of the Year means a lot to me because I have a long, deep history with the organization," said Egner, who serves on the local WICT board of directors. "Cable has great numbers and a performance record attracting women into the industry, and offering them upward mobility, but we still have a problem at the senior executive level." McGee, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Adelphia, said the industry is ahead of others "as it relates to women in key positions.""All the companies I've worked in have had a large number of women in senior management," said McGee, who has been with Adelphia for nearly two years.
She has also worked for AT&T Broadband and U S West. "(The industry) is not perfect but better than most." Both women will be inducted into the chapter's Walk of Fame. Previous Women of the Year and Walk of Fame inductees include Michelle Sie-Whitten, executive director of the Sie Foundation; Leslie Grayson of Time Warner Cable; and Ann Carlsen of Carlsen Resources.
Other 2006 honorees include: Women of Influence -- Louise Atkinson, formerly of TeleTech; Connie Campbell of Adelphia Communications; and Nancy Sanders of Time Warner Cable.
Woman in Technology -- Bonnie Cleaver, Comcast Women to Watch -- Kelly Bumann of Starz and Cindy Parsons of Comcast Colorado.
Mentor of the Year -- Ed Nafus of CSG Systems International Inc.
