Coral Gables Police Dog Found: A Certified Police Dog Was Found at a Good Samaritan’s Home Monday

June 2, 2006

May 30–A missing police dog is missing no more.

Anatool, a 4-year-old, 80-pound Belgian Malinois in the employ of the Coral Gables Police Department, was found Monday at the home of a good Samaritan.

Police said Anatool apparently went AWOL and was wandering along Ludlam Road and Sunset Drive when he was picked up by a motorist who mistook him for a lost dog. The man took Anatool to his home in the 200 block of Viscaya Avenue in Coral Gables.

One of six police dogs in the Gables department, Anatool has a chip, but not an identification collar. “The people who found him don’t watch TV or read the newspaper, so they didn’t know we were looking for him,” said Officer Martin Barros, Coral Gables police spokesman.

“But Monday morning, someone told them the dog looked like the lost police dog and they called us.” he said. “They did nothing wrong.”

Anatool, a certified police officer, disappeared Sunday from his South Miami home. The incident began when Officer Gordon Dickinson, Anatool’s handler, had looked out his window near the corner of Ludlam Road and 80th Street about 7:30 a.m. to an empty backyard.
