Student Goes Missing, but Voicemail Emptied: FAMILY HOPES HE'LL COME TO GRADUATION

May 27--The disappearance of a San Jose State University student, last seen more than a week ago, took on a mysterious facet Friday.

The voice mailbox for 23-year-old Jason Shaughnessy's cell phone had been jammed full, unable to accept new messages. But early Friday, someone dialed in the proper code and emptied the mailbox, said Rick Timms, Shaughnessy's legal guardian.

Was it an indication that Shaughnessy is safe?

No one is sure.

But, it was enough to make Timms feel slightly better.

"Yeah, somewhat," said Timms, a San Mateo resident.

"I just feel he might a little stressed out -- school, other parts of life -- and he hit a wall and went out to be by himself," Timms said.

Shaughnessy was last seen about 11 a.m. May 17, leaving his dorm room at Campus Village, San Jose State University campus police said.

But it wasn't until Wednesday that his disappearance was reported to authorities by Shaughnessy's fraternity brothers at Delta Upsilon.

"We assumed he was up at his home studying for finals, getting away from hectic college life," said Hans Jorgensen, a member of the fraternity.

Sgt. John Laws said police have no indication of foul play. Investigators were checking Friday with all of Shaughnessy's professors to determine if he had taken final exams this week.

Timms said it was unusual for Shaughnessy, who plans to attend law school, to vanish without contacting his family or friends.

And, the senior was looking forward to attending graduation ceremonies today. Timms and the family plan to attend.

"We're going to go anyway," he said. "Hopefully, he might show up."
