Jun. 8--A Winchester man might be responsible for three gas station robberies early Wednesday morning, Lexington police said today.
The Clark County Sheriff's Department arrested Hector Lewis Cruz, 36, Wednesday on unrelated burglary charges. Cruz will be transferred to Fayette County to face three counts of first-degree robbery, Lexington police said.
Authorities linked Cruz to the Lexington robberies after police released surveillance images of the robber to the media. Several people called with information, which led police to Cruz, police said.
The first robbery occurred at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday at the Thornton's on Winchester Road. A man entered the gas station, pulled out a knife and demanded money from the clerk. The man escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
He was described as 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet tall, white with a medium build and medium skin tone. The man was unshaven and was wearing a striped polo shirt.
Almost three hours later, a man with a similar description, who also was wearing a striped polo shirt, entered Thornton's on South Broadway and demanded money from the clerk while threatening to use a gun. The man escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
At 5:31 a.m., a man entered Circle K on Richmond Road and demanded money from the clerk while threatening to use a gun. The man's description was similar to the two earlier holdups, but he was wearing a dark-blue sweatshirt with red lettering on the front.
