Jun. 9--BAY CITY -- The South Texas Project has a new senior resident inspector to help determine how well the nuclear plant is following Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations.

John Dixon was appointed by the NRC to replace Jeff Cruz, who accepted a position at NRC headquarters in Bethesda, Md., said Victor Dricks, public affairs officer with NRC, Region IV.

Dixon joined the NRC in 2002 as a reactor engineer and project engineer in the division of reactor projects. Previously he was resident inspector at Arkansas Nuclear One. Before joining the NRC, Dixon worked for Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, where he earned submarine engineer qualifications, and taught naval nuclear propulsion in Charleston, S.C.

He began his new assignment with STP last month.

Dixon has a bachelor of science degree and a master's degree in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M University in College Station.

"John Dixon is very excited about his new assignment. He, his wife and daughter are looking forward to becoming part of the community he will be serving," Dricks said.

The NRC also issued its most recent annual performance assessment in March, covering calendar year 2005, Dricks said.

"Overall, STP operated safely during that period, and the plant will receive routine level of inspection during 2006," he said.

The two NRC resident inspectors perform the routine inspections.

Emergency preparedness and radiological safety inspections are slated for inspection this year by NRC specialists from the regional office in Arlington, Dricks said.
