Jun. 11--The commander and eight crew members of the USS Oklahoma City will visit the submarine's namesake city this week.

Cmdr. Ed Mayer will be the honorary chairman of Oklahoma Riverfest, which begins June 17.

Mayer also will preside over the inaugural USS Oklahoma City Submarine Race, launching as many as 10,000 miniature replicas of the submarine he commands into the Oklahoma River, according to Riverfest organizers.

The Race for Navy-sponsored event will raise money for four charities, including the USS Oklahoma Memorial at Pearl Harbor.

Mayer said he is looking forward to the trip as an opportunity for the submarine crew to build a relationship with the people of Oklahoma City.

"We're proud to be serving our country and protecting our fellow Americans," he said in a news release. "We want the city to be proud of what we do."

Mayer and members of his 140-member crew are being brought to Oklahoma City by the Oklahoma City Navy League.

They are scheduled to arrive Thursday.

Veterans plan reunion Veterans who served on the USS Perkins are planning their 16th annual reunion.

The group will gather Sept. 15-17 in Lincoln, Neb.
