Jun. 16--A Tucson man was arrested Wednesday after an employee told police that he was looking at child pornography on a computer at a University of Arizona library.
The UA Police Department responded. An investigation revealed that the man was viewing pornographic material that depicted young children under 15, according to a news release from the department.
Garrett O. Allen, 42, was arrested on suspicion of one count of public display of explicit materials and one count of sexual exploitation of a minor under 15, both of which are felonies, the release said.
The computer must be processed by a forensic computer expert. The investigation will determine if additional charges will be filed, according to the news release. That process can take several months.
Allen is not affiliated with the university, said Sgt. Eugene Mejia, a UAPD spokesman. He has been released from jail.
Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll recently began advocating that Tucson and Pima County public libraries get filters installed on all computers to prevent anyone from looking at pornography on them.
All the children's computers have filters, but adults can choose to use a filter or not.
Carroll raised concerns after reporters from a television station showed him video they had shot showing men viewing pornography on library computers. Carroll said he could see clearly what the men were viewing and was concerned that children walking past could inadvertently be exposed to it.
Pima County is to take over the Tucson-Pima Public Library system in July.
